Greetings MAPS Family!
I would like to introduce you to the Fall edition of the 2014-2015 MAPS Minutes!
We are midway through the SNMA administrative term, and I am so grateful for an incredible MAPS Committee. The MAPS Committee has been hard at work planning programming, new initiatives, and ensuring that you have the tools that will help you navigate the pre-health world and the medical school/health professions school admissions world. And we haven’t forgot about your MAPS chapters! We will be rolling out some new programming and new tools that will help with chapter development.
You may be wondering “What is a Premedical Board Member?” and “Who is Ashela Bean?”
As Premedical Board Member, I represent you, the premedical student. I oversee the MAPS Committee, serve as your voice on the Board of Directors, plan and implement programming that focus on your needs as students, applicants, and MAPS chapter leaders, and plan the premedical forum of the Annual Medical Education Conference.
I am a 3rd year medical student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine –GA Campus. I am originally from Houston, Texas. I am a proud alumna of The Johns Hopkins University (Go Blue Jays!) and the University of Texas School of Public Health. I’ve been involved with SNMA for quite a while, and I hope that you seek leadership within this great organization.
Some updates from the National MAPS Committee: We held our first “So You Want to be a Doctor” webinar in September. Slides from that webinar will be made available through Your Membership. Our next webinar will be held in December and will focus on Post-Bacc and SMP programs. This month, we are holding our MAPS 101 webinar. Back in June, our partner, IngeniusPrep, offered medical school application prep to two of our members.
Please take a moment to peruse through this edition of MAPS Minutes. You’ll learn about the different opportunities you can pursue during a gap year. If you have ever felt discouraged during school or applying to medical school, we have some great articles for you! You must stay encouraged during the path to a career in medicine. If you’re ever in need of some encouragement, the MAPS Committee is here to help!
I would like to thank the Vice Chair of the Publications Committee, Jonathan Batson, for being the Editor-in-Chief of the MAPS Minutes. If you or anyone you know is interested in submitting an article to the MAPS Minutes, please contact us! Also, registration for the Annual Medical Education Conference is now open! AMEC is in New Orleans so please register now while you can get the early-bird rate.
