Dear MAPS Family,

It is hard to believe that the academic year has come to a close in the 50th administration of the Student National Medical Association with the theme, “50 Years, One Mission Diversifying the Face of Medicine.” The MAPS & Publications Committee has been hard at work planning great initiatives to make it easier to run your MAPS chapter as well as aiding in the navigation of  your career in medicine. It has been my privilege to serve you this academic year as Vice-Chair of the Publications Committee and with the help of the MAPS Committee, to bring back the MAPS Minutes to publication. As we viewed the passing of the torch toward a new administration which will be led by President Topaz Sampson, I am elated with hope that our future as an organization is very bright. With the help of the 2014-15 Board of Directors, she will no doubt carry on the traditions of the Student National Medical Association which was paved by the likes of Dr. Alyce Gullatte MD, the founding mother of the SNMA, and many others who understood our possibilities and promise in advancing the health equity of the African-American community. It is with the work of those before us and our current state as an organization that I am confident that we will ultimately keep the torch of our organization burning bright for generations to come.

As we close this chapter in our book on our rich 50 year history, we reflect with the last installment of the 2013-14 MAPS Minutes to give our pre-medical /pre-health membership a publication with interesting articles from perspectives of our diverse family.  In this issue, we tackle a little bit of everything from articles on MAPS chapter & membership community involvements, to inspirational stories from medical students to help motivate you, the reader, to continue in your pursuits in the medical field. Also included in this edition of the MAPS Minutes in an inspirational interview on a medical student at the University of Michigan Medical School and his adversity to become a medical physician. We at the MAPS and Publications Committees  respectively hope that you enjoy the Spring 2014 edition of the MAPS Minutes and feel compelled to help contribute to our future publications (which you can find out more about by emailing the us at either maps@snma.org or publications@snma.org). Also, please send this to all  premedical and prehealth students that you know to help share the knowledge that you have gained from this newsletter.

I am truly honored and privileged to have had the opportunity to work with several driven individuals on the MAPS Minutes  and other initiatives by both the MAPS and Publications Committees to further the goals and ideals of the SNMA. As we turn towards the next page of the SNMA, I truly hope that through our efforts of the past 50 years as a driving force in diversifying the face of medicine, that we continue to foster and mentor the future leaders of tomorrow.
