Region III: Small Region, Big Heart

Region III Happenings

As you may know, Region III is composed of the great states of Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Colorado and New Mexico.Over the past few years, Region 3 has adamantly pushed for increased diversity among medical students in the southern states as well as increased knowledge of minorities to help more minority pre-medical students get into medical school in these southern states.

New Chapters Established

One new SNMA chapter was started at the brand new William Carey College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Two new MAPS chapters were established at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX and University of North Texas in Denton, TX.

The Regional Conference

The Regional Conference was hosted at the University of North Texas Health Science Center- Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth, TX. A majority of the funding was generously provided by the Admissions Office of the Health Science Center. Sessions for medical students included Residency 101, How is Residency? A Resident’s Perspective, Physicians Specialty Roundtable and SNMA Development. Sessions for Pre-Medical Students included an Application Workshop, an Overview of the Medical School Admissions Process, Careers in Medicine Panel, Medical Student Panel and an Interviewing Workshop.

Final Thoughts

In closing, it has been my pleasure to serve as Regional Director this year. Region III might not be the largest but the amount of heart that these students have has made my job almost easy. With 93% of my chapters currently active and actively submitting their paperwork on a regular basis, I’m looking forward to running again for regional director of the great region III.
